Custom quilting

I want to share with you all a recent quilt that I had the great pleasure to do some custom quilting on. It was an interesting pattern that had many different shapes depending on how you looked at. So I took a day or so to study it and figure out how I could enhance this quilt with the quilting. The pattern I believe was called Galaxy. It was pieced by Tammy Bengen as a challenge quilt from a group of her friends at a retreat they attended a year ago. She wanted it completed before she returned to the upcoming annual retreat. The first photo is one of the whole quilt. How many different motifs can you see? I see stars, square boxes on point, large X’s, or large O’s. Some of the detail quilting will help you see these differently.

Below is a close up detail of the star points. There are small squares between the star points diagonally and the large square box on point between the stars linearly across the row.

I quilted Stitch in the Ditch around the square on point below, extending the square into the white “floating” negative space.

In the photo below I pulled back and included the star points around the square on point and it makes it look like a large O.

So if you segment the blocks just half way over, the O’s change to a large X as in the photo below.

I took a class from Deloa Jones last fall and used one of her border motifs in the 2″ dark blue border, which was fun to do and I think looks great! You can see in this detail that I did straight line quilting in the white negative space. I did large spirals in the outer border. None of it is very dense to keep it “soft”.

I hope you enjoyed viewing this quilt as much as I liked quilting it!
